This wonderful late 19th century artwork was executed in grisaille, which basically means monochrome, in this case in shades of black and grey. The very folky portrait appears to have been drawn and painted in charcoal and watercolor on paper, then the paper was affixed to canvas, placed on a stretcher and heavily varnished. The stark contrast of blacks, whites and greys combined with the large family grouping makes for a wonderfully visual and unusual portrait.
