This wonderful little box features a design on the lid comprised of inlaid mother of pearl triangles and tiny copper nails or wires. The box is not signed or dated but judging from the craftsmanship and surface it dates from the late 18th to early 19th century. The lid is held in place by a hand made brass hinge and closure. The surface of the box is outstanding with an untouched deep patina that displays beautifully. Included with the box is the original identification label that was hand written on laid paper and a small note card from when the box was placed on loan at some time by a Mrs. Hoes. Both paper articles state the box was from the Island of Rhodes. Also included with the box is a tiny hand made mother of pearl spoon, possibly used for snuff or salt.
