This wonderful folk art carved marble sheep was likely carved by a worker in a monument works as a lunch hour or after hours whimsey. The figure dates from the late 19th century and is carved fully in the round in an almost never seen upright standing position. The face of the sheep exhibits a fantastic, simply fun expression with remnants of a dark highlighting on the legs, mouth, eyes and ears etc. With the carved "sheepish" grin and unusual standing position, I strongly believe the figure was made for enjoyment rather than to be used on a grave as with the recumbent lambs you will see. The marble is a creamy white color and the figure displays beautifully.
