This wonderful whirligig appears to be made of hickory and is in the form of a Roman Soldier with sword and shield. The gig dates from the late 19th to early 20th century and is one of a small group that were apparently all made by the same hand. Several years ago a nearly identical example was offered in the M.A.D. while another was sold in 2001 by Ron Bourgeault at Northeast Auctions. Included with the gig is a small contemporary stand to aid in it's display.
