EARLY TO MID 19th CENTURY COCONUT FOLK ART CARVED DIPPER CUP

Sailor Art Coconut Dipper

This offering is for a beautifully carved coconut dipper or shallow cup. The dipper dates from the early to mid 19th century and was likely carved by an American sailor on a lengthy voyage. The dipper features a beautifully carved design of a central shield within a wreath cartouch topped by a Chippendale style carved shell. Flanking the central design above an below are high relief carvings of love birds on an urn with a torch, bow and quiver above, as well as wreaths that encircle the central motifs. The cup would have been carved by a sailor to pass the time and given the love bird motifs it was probably made for a sweetheart at home
