This wonderful chair exhibits the essence of of what great folk art is all about. As you can see, in this extraordinary chair the decorator has taken the most mundane of objects and elevated it to the level of a masterpiece of American Folk Art. The chair features beautiful abstractly rendered elements and florals as well as wonderful examples from the animal, bird and insect worlds. There is a rabbit, a squirrel and a peacock with butterflies among the red, yellow and blue flowers. The chair is likely from the Pennsylvania area dating from the mid to late 19th century and the painted surfaces appear to be the original first finish. The decoration was painted freehand, possibly with the aid of a stencil for guidance. The surface is as you see in the included images, simply superb with appropriate wear and no apologies. The rush seat is probably not the original.
If believe if I were given the privilage of assigning a nickname to the individual that decorated the chair I would have to call him or her, "The Domino Artist" for the unique decoration of the third rail of the chairs back.
