This offering is for an early, circa 1850's, possibly earlier, Maple Bootjack. The bootjack exhibits a wonderful form and design with superb craftsmanship. There are three initials on the inside written in an early ink and hand that I believe are C. J. C., most likely those of the maker, my belief is that research of the initials may prove the origin of the bootjack to be Shaker. The screws in the hinges have hand cut slots in the heads and the two nails are early hand made nails with somewhat rosehead shaped heads. When closed and stood on end the bootjack looks almost like modern sculpture, whoever made it he certainly had an excellent eye for design.
